What Are You Thankful For?

Traditions can be a fun way to bond with your kiddos and make a lasting impact!

As soon as Fall starts changing the leaves in our neighborhood, we put a big construction paper tree without leaves on our wall. Our tradition of filling in the tree begins as I start looking for acts of kindness done by all members of our home. I write it on a leaf and tape it to the tree. The kids love to join in and write down when something good happens as well. They are so proud as they see the tree blossom with colorful leaves. And because it is Fall, they get creative as they design a scene of falling leaves as well.

During this time, attitudes change, and I am all for it!! Making Santa’s good list is always my kid’s goal. However, my objective is to teach my family that the kindness shone during this season should be practiced all year long. I am happy to say that I definitely see a shift towards a more positive mindset from the oldest to the youngest.

What I love most is that this mindset stays with the family well after Christmas! It makes me very grateful for my fantastic kiddos and loving husband. This tradition makes me reflect on the things I am personally most grateful for. It was hard to name just a few and actually, the ones I chose surprised me.

Grateful for mistakes

Making mistakes can be so valuable, especially when I can turn it into a learning experience for my kids. I can model how to repair what went wrong and the different ways you can fix what happened when the first way didn’t work. I try my best be quick to say I was wrong, if I am at fault, and talk about how to apologize. Practicing perseverance, how to keep going when working on something, is a big deal in my home. Just as importantly, I try to teach when to laugh at oneself or when to stop and ask for help.

Grateful for chaos

I lovingly call any time I am at my house, chaotic fun. It might be a lot for some, but I find something warm in the constant movement in the atmosphere. I realize, as my family gets older, that these moments will turn into memories that may forever be etched into my heart. The best days come from chaos and impromptu activities— and when you live with a 6- and 7-year-old, those moments come frequently! Routine is definitely needed and valued; however, spontaneity sometimes brings out the best giggles and fun!

Grateful for silence

Any caregiver would agree, hanging with the kiddos can be the BEST thing ever…. so is getting a small (or large) breather. Spending alone time is for collecting the thoughts that float in the back of your mind during the day. Or it can be the perfect time to think of NOTHING!! I don’t get ‘me time’ often, but as my children grow, I am learning the importance of taking care of myself so I can be the best version of myself. I tell you what though, that is very difficult for me. I am still learning how to drop everything and have some ‘me time’ when given the opportunity.

What are you most grateful for? What traditions have you set up with your loved ones?
